Shankar Mahadevan – multiple national award winner – celebrates his 49th birthday today. Shankar is a well renowned music director and playback singer who has given hits after hits in Bollywood and in regional languages. He also debuted as an actor in a Marathi movie Katyar Kaljat Ghusli in 2015.
Shankar started as a playback singer in the year 1997 in Tamil cinema but very next year he grabbed all the eyeballs in Hindi music industry with his debut album “Breathless”. He sung the title track which was around 6 minutes long in one breath and that earned him all the fame and attention. He then forged a team with his friends Ehsaan and Loy and turned into music composer with Rockford which was a musical runaway hit. Since then the trio Shankar-Ehsaan-Loy has never looked back and gave huge blockbusters such as Mission Kashmir, Dil Chahta Hai, Kal Ho Naa Ho (Got National award for KHNH), Lakshya, Bunty aur Bubly, Don, Taare Zameen pe (won another national award for his song MAA), Rock On, Zindgi Naa Milegi Dobara, Bhaag Milkha Bhaag, 2 States to name a few.
Shankar, born in a Tamil family in Mumbai, started learning classical music when he was five. He holds a degree in Computer Science Engineering and worked for some time in IT industry before venturing into music industry full time. He has received number of awards as a playback singer and composer including 4 national awards.
In March 2011, Shankar founded Shankar Mahadevan Academy which offers tutorials and virtual classes for vocal courses online for students across the globe. His sons have also debuted now as playback singers, elder one (Siddharth Mahadevan) even winning best singer award for Zinda in Bhaag Milkha Bhaag.
